Your massage will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Relaxing music will play and you will lie on a massage table.
Most massages are traditionally done with the client completely unclothed; however, you may leave underwear or shorts on. You will be properly draped during your massage.
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax on the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet.
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
A typical full-body massage will include work on your back, shoulders, legs, head, neck, arms, hands, and feet. However we can concentrate on one or more specific areas if you would prefer.
Before the massage, feel free to ask the practitioner any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed to do. Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the massage.
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness and great productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissue during a massage, it’s recommended you drink plenty of water after your massage.
Massage can release chronic tension and pain., improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue, and stress, promote faster healing of muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well being.
Yes. That’s why it’s so important, before your massage, the practitioner asks general health questions. As well as you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications your are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for a massage before your session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.
Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of time. The development of Swedish massage is often inaccurately credited to Per Henrik Ling, though the Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes. The term "Swedish" massage is actually only recognized in English and Dutch speaking countries, and in Hungary. Elsewhere (including Sweden) the style is referred to as "classic massage".
Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is not uncommon for receivers of deep tissue massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two. It should not be confused with “deep pressure” massage, which is one that is performed with sustained strong, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session, and that is not performed to address a specific complaint..
Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a form of soft tissue manual therapy. It is distinguished from other types of massage in that a quasi-static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of skeletal muscle. Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points. NMT is a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system (brain, spinal column and nerves) with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system. NMT is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homeostatic balance.
A stone massage uses water-heated stones to apply pressure and heat to the body. Stones coated in oil can also be used by the therapist delivering various massaging strokes. The hot stones used are commonly Basalt stones (or lava rocks) which over time have become extremely polished and smooth. The stones pressure, while retaining heat, deeply penetrates into the muscles, releasing tension.
